"I highly recommend every artist take the Get Your Grant Together class,
it has changed my life. Within 6 months of completing the course and applying
the principles and skills that I learned, I have received one national award,
one artist residency, and a major grant to pursue my artistic dreams. None of
this would have been possible had I not made the relatively small investment
of my time. I learned more practical information in a month than in the seven
years I pursued my BFA and MFA, no joke."
- Michael Markowsky
In 2007, Michael won an individual artist's grant from the City of Pasadena
as well as Robert Rauschenberg's 'Power of Art' award: the nation's
highest honor for art teachers.

"It has been three months since i took Get Your GRANT Together. I have several grant proposals out - which is several more than I would have had out, had I not taken the workshop. Even as I wait for the first replies (and confidently continue to submit more proposals), I can already say that Get Your GRANT Together has had a significant impact on my career. Popular thought holds that "doing business" is
an unfortunate-if-necessary distraction from an artist's work. This workshop
proved to me (as have Side Street's other workshops) that conducting the business
of art can be as creatively valuable as time spent in the studio."

"Just a note of thanks and update - I was in the Get Your Grant Together workshop
last fall. Having that two-page description in the mock application form proved
very useful, even outside of proposal-writing. As the workshop was ending, colleagues
put me in touch with Linda Pollack, in residence at 18th Street and curating
the first Future of Nations show in their year-long set of exhibitions. The show
is called "Patriot Acts," dealing with all kinds of constitutional issues, so
my "jury duty project" was
a great fit. Linda liked the idea and invited me to join the show. I really credit
your workshop in the 'chance-favoring-readiness' vein. I've also been encouraged
enough to apply for a Creative Capital grant and some other funding sources to
fully realize my project. Again, having some carefully crafted language on hand
to work from is invaluable, and it keeps the threads alive as the project evolves."
- Sara Hendren
Sarah's video component of her larger "jury duty" public project is currently
on exhibit at the 18th Street Arts Complex in Santa Monica

"I feel like I learned a concrete skill, like how to change a tire. I didn't
know how to do it before, but I can do it now. If I needed to get an application
out tomorrow, I could, and feel fairly confident that I was on the right track."
- Leslie G.
"All the work that goes into the proposal--the
artist's statement, the self-evaluation, etc., forced me to look at myself as
an artist and come away with a better understanding of my work. The information
and resources provided were great. I enjoyed being able to work with strangers
to see if I was communicating clearly to those who don't know me. I felt as though
support was available if I needed anything. The mock panel had to be the best
part for me, though. I appreciate that rare opportunity to observe that process."
- Annemarie R.
"I expected to learn how to write a proposal, and that is exactly what I did.
The overall response by the panel to my proposal was favorable, with very constructive
criticism, and so I feel I actually exceeded my expectation. I came in knowing
next to nothing about grants and proposal writing, and left with a much stronger
feeling of competency. The mock panel at the end was the most interesting to
me. It was great to be a fly on the wall and watch different personalities mull
things through. I also enjoyed seeing the work of all the talented company I
was in during the class. It was very gratifying to learn that there is help for
artists out there, and Judith was a tower of knowledge on how to get that help.
Both Lauren and Jon were amazing as well, and I couldn't have gotten my proposal
finished without them." - Laurie

"I didn't know anything about grants, where to find them, how to apply for them.
After this class I feel very competent and knowledgeable about applying for a
grant." - Emilia S.
