Monique Prieto
is an artist who was born in Los Angeles, and continues to live and
work there. Her paintings of idiosyncratic color abstractions are
carefully calculated and revised on the computer. Basic shapes that
seem haphazardly arranged, represent a character, a feeling, or an
object, or some element that has a definite purpose of being there.
The shapes have the undeniable feel of a computer mouse - a line that
is part human, part machine. "Painting has such a great ability
to give a lot on its own, and so I play with that, its generosity.
I try not to stifle it by imposing too much of my own little narratives.
Though I most definitely need them in the paintings - they give me
a purpose."
Prieto has shown throughout the US, and in London, Basel, Denmark,
Italy and Germany. She has quite a following of collectors of abstract
painting, and is represented by ACME Gallery in Los Angeles, and Corvi-Mora
in London.
