Edgar
Arceneaux an installation artist
who explores societal patterns in much the same way that
chaos theory examines the physical world. Described by
The New York Times as an "exciting
combination of superb draftsman and subtle conceptualist," Edgar
creates work that explores language and science to establish
unexpected connections between words, objects, places, and
people. At once precise and offhand, his mixed-media installations
link seemingly disparate subjects within a network of associations
that bridges ideas across eras and cultures.
Edgar's ongoing project Drawings of Removal is
a meditation on the fleeting nature of the present and
the function of memory. The installation/performance
features an ever-changing array of images that are layered,
cut-out, drawn, and re-drawn by Arceneaux over the course
of the show, live in the exhibition space. The constantly
shifting work, inspired in part by his father’s memory of his hometown of Beaumont, Texas as it existed in his youth and as it exists today, mimics the nature of memory itself. In the artist’s
own words, “the
work not only represents the idea of loss or of the
gap between memory and desire, but is literally active.
Something is being built and something is breaking down.”
Edgar was named a 2007 Eli Broad Fellow by United
States Artists: recognizing him as one of the Nation's finest living
artists. Edgar's 2006 mixed-media video installation The
Alchemy of Comedy...Stupid (featuring actor/comedian David
Alan Grier) is currently on display at the 2008
Whitney Biennial. Edgar lives and works in Pasadena, California
and is represented by Susanne
Vielmetter.
