Jo Ann Callis is a Los Angeles-based artist who has worked largely in photography, but also in sculpture, and most recently in painting. She has been interested in the subject of domesticity, from its physical appearance to its psychological edge. Callis has taught at California Institute of the Arts since 1976. She has exhibited extensively in this country, but also in England, Japan, Germany, and Australia. Her work appears in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan. Her work has appeared in the Whitney Biennial, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Des Moines Art Center. Ms. Callis has received three NEA Artist Fellowships, an Award in the Visual Arts Grant, and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. She is currently represented by Craig Krull Gallery, Santa Monica.
